What "Determination" Looks Like

This boy is "Determination" personified.  For his birthday this year all he wanted was a pair of Rollerblades.

Conner told him, "Rollerblades are dangerous."
Kedar told him, "Rollerblades are hard."
I told him, "Rollerblades take a lot of practice."

He didn't care; he wanted Rollerblades.  So Rollerblades are what he got.

The day after his birthday we laced them up and went out onto the sidewalk.  We slowly made our way around the block.  He fell a lot and each time I braced for the tears, for the frustration, for him to say he never wanted to Rollerblade again.  It didn't happened.

After that first day, he wanted to practice every spare minute that he had.  It took a few weeks, but soon I heard him burst through the front door, "MOM!  I made it around the block without falling!"  He was tired, he was sweaty, he was ecstatic!

Next, he dragged out his Healies; these were his birthday present last year.  When he unwrapped them he had been thrilled but the novelty had soon worn off.  He had tried and tried to get the hang of them but just couldn't quite get it.  Soon, they were in his closet gathering a thick layer of dust.   But after his success with his Rollerblades, he was on a roll (literally).

He put himself on a strict practice schedule again.  When he called me outside a few hours later, this is what I saw:

Just like a pro!

I am so proud of Ethan for sticking it out and doing something that was hard for him!
